How many of you have forgotten the Chinese language you’ve learned for more than 10 years in school and realized that the Chinese language is needed everywhere, especially in business? Don’t worry, by finding the right approach you can still to re-learn and recall it. In this blog post, I will share some tips to help you with your Chinese learning journey!
Find a Language Buddy
The ultimate reason we learn a language is that we want to communicate with people and convey the message properly. You can practice this by actively using the language through storytelling with your language buddy and catching up with each other's life events or business ideas. This process helps you think in Chinese, and at the same time, you build your fluency and increase your comfort level with using the Chinese language. Be consistent with your language buddy, try to set a time every week to meet or call each other to practice.
To find a language buddy, here are a few recommended apps for you: Hello Talk, Hallo; and here is the recommended website: conversationalexchange.com.
Wani Language also has Discord Server where fellow learners are practicing Chinese there: https://discord.com/invite/N7ME9HuPU4.
Use it
It’s easy to forget the language if you don't use it. It's better to incorporate the Chinese language into your daily life. It may be through watching Chinese dramas, reading Chinese books/articles, or having a Chinese conversation with your Chinese-speaking colleagues/friends.
Expand your Chinese Character
There are thousands of Chinese characters out there and some of them are commonly used. By familiarizing yourself with the widely used Chinese character, recalling, memorizing, and practicing it every day you will be able to feel your improvement in the long run.
But of course, make the learning process fun, otherwise, you will feel burdened by it. If you are a visual learner you can watch Chinese dramas or documentaries. Observe and comprehend the word usage that they are using in the scenes and try applying that newly learned vocabulary whenever you encounter the same scenes in drama or movies in real life. Comprehend the situation and the word usage because sometimes memorization can be heavy and rigid.
Know how Chinese Characters are formed
It is interesting how Chinese characters are formed and it would be helpful if you dive into it because you will understand more of the logic of the words.
Understand some Chinese culture
Immerse yourself in Chinese culture. Know their holidays and what are the stories behind them. This process will improve your Chinese because it trains you to think in Chinese. As much as possible, while learning the history behind Chinese culture insert some Chinese language scenes, and start with children’s story, it’s easier to begin in this way.
If you're learning a language, try making it fun and enjoyable. You can be more consistent if you find joy in what you’re doing, the process may be hard but always go back to the reason why you're learning the language in the first place.
